Your Jewellery Questions Answered
What is the difference between all your collections?
We design and make four collections, and each one has a distinct personality.
Objet Trouvé and Trousseau are our signature contemporary vintage jewellery and bridal jewellery ranges. Both these ranges are completely made from scratch in precious metals and semi precious stones. That means each component used within these ranges is hand made in our studio either from one of our own castings or from a piece of Sterling Silver. Because of this, every single piece of Objet Trouvé and Trousseau jewellery is completely unique, and every element of these pieces of jewellery can be made to our customers own specifications but does also mean that these pieces of jewellery take longer to make.
Like Objet Trouvé and Trousseau, every piece in Coquette, our signature hair accessories range, is completely hand made from scratch, and can also be made to our customers exact specifications. Templates are hand cut and every bead, crystal, diamante and Freshwater Pearls in the Coquette range is stitched by hand in our studio. If you have a look at the close up detail images on the product pages, you can see that there are hundreds of beads in each piece, and obviously although we may be able to sew quite fast, these heavily embellished pieces do take many hours to make.
We developed our Darling bridal diffusion range specifically to provide an equally beautiful but more affordable alternative to our Trousseau bridal jewellery range. We use many of the same materials such as Freshwater Pearls and Swarovski crystal, but replace hand made Cubic Zirconia Sterling Silver settings with pre-set diamante and ready made Silver plated components, so that we can keep the cost down and pass the saving on to our customers, as each piece takes much less time to make.
Why is the Darling diffusion range more affordable than Trousseau?
The short answer is the labour cost. While we use many of the same materials within both ranges, the Darling range was designed specifically to provide an affordable ready to wear alternative to Trousseau, as it takes a lot less time to make a Darling piece than a Trousseau piece.
What is your jewellery made from?
Our Trousseau and Objet Trouvé ranges are made from Sterling Silver, Freshwater Pearls, Cubic Zirconia and Semi Precious stones. Our Love Susie ranges also uses Sterling Silver, Freshwater Pearls and some Swarovski Pearls in addition to silver and gold plated diamante components, Swarovski Crystal beads and Austrian crystal. Our Coquette range uses Silver plated hair accessory components with Freshwater Pearls, Swarovski Crystal and glass beads.
Where do your stones and pearls come from? Are they responsibly sourced?
We purchase our stones and pearls from specific stone dealers in London. We choose our stone dealers extremely carefully and ensure that not only do they they supply high quality materials, but also that the provenance of the stones and pearls can be checked and only originate from fairly traded and responsibly mined and farmed sources.
What is Vermeil?
Vermeil, sometimes called 'Silver Gilt', is heavily gold plated Sterling Silver. In order to be classed as Vermeil, the gold layer must be a thickness of at least 1.5 micrometres.
How long does gold plating last?
Our gold plating is very heavy, and we have found that some pieces worn for many years before the plating starts to dull. Necklaces and earrings will wear better than bracelets and rings. Re-plating of a piece that has dulled is easy to arrange.
Do you make jewellery in solid gold?
Yes, all designs in our Objet Trouvé and Trousseau ranges can be made in 9ct or 18ct yellow, white or rose gold. All pieces made in gold are bespoke and made to your exact specifications.
Are your designs available in responsibly sourced gold or silver?
Yes, we can make most pieces in either Eco Silver (Sterling silver made from recycled silver) and 18ct Fairtrade gold. Our standard sterling silver is purchased from a world leading bullion dealer, actively committed to supplying responsibly sourced precious metal. Any design made in Eco Silver or Fairtrade gold would be bespoke and made to your own specifications.
Can you adapt a design for me?
Of course! We can customise any design just for you. If a piece catches your eye but you would like it in a different colour, with your birthstone, pearls instead of faceted stones, the size increased or decreased, an earring turned into a necklace or vice versa, the list is endless. Even our Love Susie range can be customised to your own requirements.
Can you match colours?
Yes, we are often asked to match colours. Pearls and semi precious stones can be matched to the colour of an existing piece of jewellery or the colour of your or your bridesmaids dresses, and we can use any colour of Swarovski crystal and Swarovski pearls. Colour charts are available on our Colour Matching page.
Can I have it bigger, smaller, longer or shorter?
Of course! As we make to order, we can make anything to pretty much any size or length.
Do you make rings or cuff links?
We do! Although we don't have any rings in our online ranges, we often undertake bespoke ring orders, and also make cuff links and tie pins upon request.
I don't have pierced ears. Do you make clip on earrings?
Yes we do. We find screw fittings to be more secure than clip on fittings, and can make almost any of our designs with a non pierced ear fitting. As these fittings are not one of our standard fitting, earrings made with non pierced ear fitting are bespoke pieces, made to your exct specifications.
I want something personalised. Do you do engraving?
Yes! Many of our pieces can be engraved with initials and a date or a message, depending upon the size of the piece. We use a traditional hand engraver whom specialises in copperplate engraving. There is an additional fee for engraving, which is charged per character, and adds approximately 5 working days to the lead time. All engraved items are bespoke pieces, made to your own exact specifications.
What exactly is bespoke jewellery?
Simply put, bespoke jewellery is a piece of jewellery which is made to your own exact specifications. Depending upon the design, you will choose the size, stone colour, stone shape, pearl colour, drop length, metal, chain, and almost anything else you can think of. Each piece is unique only to you and no one else will have the same piece of jewellery.
How long does bespoke jewellery take to make?
We usually advise an estimated lead time of 2 - 6 weeks for the completion of bespoke jewellery. However we have had urgent orders where bespoke jewellery has been needed within a couple of days! If you're thinking about a bespoke piece but need it very quickly, just get in touch and we can let you know whether we will be able to have it completed within your timescale, and we'll do our best to help if at all possible.
Where is your jewellery made?
All our jewellery is made in our studio on the South coast of the UK, which we have recently relocated from smoky old London to sunny seaside Worthing, West Sussex. Its rather nice!
Is your jewellery hallmarked?
Under UK hallmarking legislation, it is a legal requirement to hallmark all jewellery containing precious metals over a specific weight. Although most of our jewellery weighs well below that weight, we use standard .925 Sterling Silver and .750 18ct Gold marks on all our silver and gold jewellery. The piece of jewellery is always hallmarked by the highest specific metal content, so vermeil jewellery, being made from a thin layer of gold applied to a heavier Sterling Silver base, is always hallmarked as Sterling Silver, which is the main metal content.
I'm allergic to some metal, can I wear your jewellery?
All our jewellery, even the silver plated components complies with the EU Nickel Directive, which limits the amount of nickel (the compound responsible for most metal allergies) in metal used in jewellery manufacture to a very small amount. However, should you have an allergy to nickel or base/plated metals we would recommend only wearing precious metals such as sterling silver in order to minimise the risk of your exposure.
Do you re-string pearls?
Yes we can re-string pearls. We use traditional silk hand knotting to string our pearls, to make our pearl necklaces and bracelets secure for many years. We can re-string any string of pearls, or semi precious stones and charge a small fee for items not purchased from ourselves.
These are just a small selection of questions we are often asked about our jewellery. If you have any others questions at all, just email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will do our best to help.
